Founded in 1997, the Department has grown into a vibrant academic community where new ideas and creative thinking thrive within a well-structured and constantly evolving learning environment. It stands out as the only Department of Mediterranean Studies in Greece and one of the few of its kind worldwide. The Department hosts six research laboratories, participates in international collaborations, and maintains a strong portfolio of funded projects. Its modern, well-equipped facilities, situated next to the medieval city in the center of Rhodes, offer a harmonious blend of culture, beauty, and academic engagement.
Our faculty and staff are committed to supporting your academic journey through an interdisciplinary perspective that deepens your understanding of the past and strengthens your insight into the future. We are delighted to accompany you on this journey and wish you a productive and inspiring academic year.

Welcome Message
from the Programme Director
Welcome to the Undergraduate Programme of Studies “Eastern Mediterranean Studies. Archaeology-History-Culture” of the Department of Mediterranean Studies: Archaeology, Linguistics, International Relations, at the University of the Aegean.
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to multicultural Rhodes — an island that has been a crossroads of civilisations, ideas, and cultures for thousands of years. Here, history is not something distant; it surrounds you every day. You will walk through ancient streets, study in sight of the sea, and experience the living heritage of the Mediterranean in all its richness.
This program was created for students like you — curious, open-minded, and passionate about understanding the ancient and modern worlds of this region. Our courses bring together archaeology, history, and culture in an interdisciplinary way, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience and fieldwork.
At the same time, life in Rhodes offers something truly special: a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment where students and professors form a close academic community.
I hope your studies here will not only expand your knowledge but also deepen your appreciation for the Mediterranean — its past, its people, and its continuing influence today.
Welcome to Rhodes, and welcome to our international academic family.
